In the era of 12th century, there was a powerful black witch in Bali named Calonarang, which spread a spell for villagers who didn’t want to marry her daughter Ratna Manggali.
Prabu Airlangga as the King of Bali kingdom sent his best warrior to fight Calonarang, but he failed the task many times. One day, Prabu Airlangga told Mpu Baradah and Mpu Bahula to face Calonarang, but they had their own strategy, which was to send Mpu Bahula to marry Ratna Manggali, so he can steal the secret magic book of Calonarang and use it to defeat her, with which they succeeded.
And that’s how the Calonarang dance is held in some of holy ceremony in Bali, besides memorizing the legend of Rangdeng girah.
